Categories
Here are all the categories used on this site and what they mean. I try to apply them even-handedly, but they're subjective by nature and sometimes I just plain slip up. If you think a page should be in a particular category it isn't, or if you wonder why it's in a category, or if you'd like to suggest new categories entirely, tell me about it on this page's discussion page.
Page Types
Every content page (that is, apart from user pages, system pages, and help pages) gets put in at least one of these three "type" categories:
The first is for journal entries only.
The second is for non-fiction items,
OR a journal entry that primarily discusses a particular non-fiction item somewhere else on the site,
OR a journal entry that looks like it could have been a standalone non-fiction item.
The third is for fiction,
OR journal entries containing fiction (poetry counts),
OR journal entries primarily discussing a piece of fiction elsewhere on the site.
That sounds more confusuing than it is. The point is that if you search on the Fiction category you will get all my fiction, no matter where it lives, and any pages which are mostly about it.
Page Topics
There are also these "topic" categories, which not every page has to have:
- Life - about events of my life in the real world
- Online - about events of my life in the online world
- Gender - about gender issues (although often just my own) or gender-related observations
- Sex - including just about any discussion of sexuality, pornography, etc.
- Interpersonal - anything about my dealings with other people, or groups of people, but also includes omphaloskeptic items where I prattle on about the insides of my psyche
- Misanthropy - anywhere where I talk about why humans are stupid and worthless
- Politics - I define this very broadly
- Religion - this too
- Violence - including war, crime, etc
- Law - comes up surprisingly often, I have a lot of lawyers among regular readers
- Isms - including racism, sexism, classism, and other -isms we don't have words for yet
- Technology - This does NOT include me talking about my job, that's Life
- Food - includes beverages, which include booze
- Media - usually accompanied by one of these:
- Film
- Periodicals - including newspapers
- Books
- Games - mostly the computer kind, although you never know
- Music
- TV
- Art
- Websites
- Advertising - If I'm discussing an advertising website, then this trumps Websites
RSS
There is a special category "RSS," which is a signal to throw information about that page into the site's RSS newsfeed. This is different from the RSS and Atom options you might see in the toolbox. Discussion of this here (login required).
