It may or may not be of interest that Le Guin came back to this problem with The Left Hand of Darkness multiple times -- two separate essays in her books on writing, and also a distinctly less asexual take on Gethenian personal life called "Coming of Age in Karhide," available in her collection The Birthday of the World.
