Excuses, Please
Today (by which I mean Sunday - it's one a.m. as I post this) it snowed briefly. It wasn't cold enough for the snow to accumulate on the ground, mind you, but it was cold enough for snow. Mostly this was due to the freezing windstorms, which lowered the temperature from fifty to an apparent forty.
Yesterday it was between sixty-five and seventy degrees, with hot windstorms of up to fifty miles an hour. The wind was blowing so hard in the grocery store parking lot that it was rocking my Tercel on its tires (with both doors closed and no windows rolled down). People were wearing T-shirts and shorts.
I officially do not understand this weather.
I have decided I'm going to make a list of all the things that instantly provoke the "this annoys me" reaction and try to make an honest attempt at figuring out why. Too often I come up with an elaborate, fabricated set of reasons why something annoys me, when the truth is I have no idea. Better to have a wrong excuse, a part of my brain keeps insisting, than to not understand one's own reactions ....
For example, I realized again when posting to the TG Fiction list that the collections Dick For A Day and Chick For A Day - stories about what would happen if you spent twenty-four hours as the opposite sex - annoy me instinctively, so much so that I haven't ventured to read either of them. But I also realized I am not entirely sure why.
The reason I gave the list is part of it, but only a small part, I think. I think it has something to do with why I basically dislike transgender fiction. I've been wanting to write about that for ages now, but the last time I tried it, last week, I ended up writing three thousand words of autobiography which got me no closer to the answer.
I'm obviously not ready to figure it out yet - my brain keeps diverting me into the Excuses section.
