Fingers vs. Ears

Tomorrow is commencement at the Institvte. The Magliozzi brothers from Car Talk are the commencement speakers. (Boy, I hope I spelled their surname correctly!) They're alums, you know, and local heroes besides.

I wouldn't miss that for the world. I can't attend, of course - that's actually a pretty hard ticket to get - but it'll be on the TVs around where I work, or I can watch it over the internet.

After that, I have to finish up my obligations for the week and go from work to the airport, wherein I fly to Washington to see Nonelvis' parents and run the race.

So you may not hear from me for a few days.

In other minor local news:

I bought real earrings yesterday. Little azure scarabs, malachite leaves, and small lapis cabochons on studs. Today I wore the scarabs to go out drinking and conversing with Molly. My ears are not in the best shape - I think that while the starter studs were in, the holes never did get really clean. But they'll be okay.

Nonelvis wants to borrow my earrings now. I guess that means she liked my choices.

Eric told me a while back that the nail polish was more likely to get strange looks than the earrings. Molly seemed to agree with that, after the fact. This surprises me. For some reason I'd think it would be the other way 'round.

However - since beginning the nail polish, I have been noticing who does and doesn't wear it on the subway, and fewer people these days wear nail polish than I thought, so perhaps they're right.

The cabochons (ellipses with a rounded top and a flat back - it's a jewelry-making word and the only reason I know it is because I was into that once) are probably going to get the most use this weekend, because they're the most subtle of the three pairs, and Nonelvis' dad is the conservative one, the one that will eventually keep me from wearing a dress at the wedding. I don't quite know what he'll say about the earrings.

(Nonelvis, earlier tonight: "If he says anything, I'll hurt him." This is not especially reassuring.)
