cruft and ferrets

I dreamed last night that I had a small ferret with white fur with small irregular black spots. Her name was Vivian. She lived in my closet, hiding among all the boxes and miscellany in the bottom. I fed her pieces of bread on occasion, and at one point she found some plastic Easter grass and was chewing on it.

I had a cat that liked to eat Easter grass once, but it's a bad idea. It passes through their digestive system intact and provides an unpleasant colorful surprise in the litter box.

It wasn't a very good dream. This week's Slow Wave (10,000 Dead Mice) is much better.

I was walking to the subway and thinking that my stepfather would really be beside himself. He is an incorrigible trash-picker. He can generally buy whatever he needs, but if he gets it from the rubbish heap, it's like he's scored a coup - it's a sport and a challenge. There was some good trash on the street this morning. A wooden folding screen. A big shallow metal pan, about 6' by 1' by 2" deep. A rectangular wicker basket with two folding handles.

My mother would say that my stepfather's cheap, but I think I'm on his side here. I don't throw something out until I absolutely cannot redeem it any longer, and sometimes it shocks me to see what's languishing on the sidewalk.

On the other hand, when I moved up here I had to throw out about ten years' accumulation of miscellaneous things, like large metal pans, that I had picked up but never actually used. Sometimes you can't take it with you. If I'd taken all my cruft, I'd have needed a second truck.
